First Hand Account: Ice Storm 2008

Last Thursday night an ice storm passed through the Northeastern portion of the US.  The storm rained down over an inch of ice, which caked itself onto anything and everything.  By Friday morning the storm had passed and ice was everywhere, so were half of the branches in my neighborhood.  Power lines all over the state of New Hampshire had been toppled by debris, leaving over 430,00 homes without power for much of the following weekend.

With the power missing from nearly every major section of Dover, NH, travel became a nuisance as traffic light failure caused a dangerous gridlock.  Shelters needed to be opened across the state, though they were ill equipped for the sheer volume of people needing places to stay overnight.  It amazed me how such a small storm could cause such mass hysteria through an entire state…the ice melted away no more than 12 hours after it stopped raining.  Yet the power outages brought us to a State of Emergency, declared officially by President Bush.  As of the publishing of this post, Tuesday December 16th, five full days after the storm first hit, nearly 100,000 are still without power.  Hopefully, for the sake of these people’s safety and sanity, power will be restored soon.

I did my best to document the ice surrounding my house, but thankfully most of my neighborhood was spared.  Despite all the power outages throughout the state, we never lost it ourselves.

-Stay warm NH-
